5 Iconic Hikes in Canterbury

5 Iconic Hikes in Canterbury

From climbing mountains to discovering hidden tarns Canterbury has so many hikes to be discovered. In this post, I have put together 5 of the Most Iconic Hikes in Canterbury that I have mentioned in my blog that are well worth checking out if you are in the area. The length of these hikes ranges from almost a couple hours through to two full days of hiking. Each of the hikes is within 3 hours drive of Christchurch from a variety of different areas within Canterbury. From Arthur’s Pass to Kaikoura to Hakatere, there are so many places to explore and I have only scratched the surface recommending these hikes. Many of the hikes that I have recommended below can be done as day hikes or as an overnight hike with the walk in and travel being so short.

Bealey Spur

Bealey Spur Hut in Arthur's Pass

Bealey Spur is a classic hike that eases its way through native forest in Arthur’s Pass. It’s often done as a day walk and has a lot of flexibility. There are many lookouts along the way which work well as points to stop and turn around from if you are short of time or energy. There is little to see if you make it all the way to the hut but a small old musterer’s hut and toilet. It’s perfect if you are keen to take a visitor to New Zealand out on a hike, or if you want to get a better view of Arthur’s Pass. The track is well maintained and sees plenty of foot traffic however the trail is long enough that it is unlikely that you will see too many parties hoarding the views. It’s approximately an hour and forty-five minute drive from Christchurch.

Tarn Hut

Descending Lilburne Hill on the way down to Youngman Stream Hut

Tarn Hut is a local trail, hidden in the back of the Canterbury Foothills. It’s a great escape into the backcountry and is especially beautiful in winter. When the temperature plummets in winter the tarn freezes over. If you are game you can stand out in the middle of the tarn without the ice breaking. The hike up to the hut is becoming more widely known and the hut could easily be full on a weekend so be sure to bring a tent with you. The details below for the second day are via the summit of Lilburne hill and Youngman Stream Hut. With such beautiful views and a sense that you are deep in the backcountry, Tarn Hut is a beautiful weekend escape.

Woolshed Creek Hut

Woolshed Creek Hut is a Canterbury classic that is well known for the easy short walk in, water caves and surroundings that are a lot of fun to explore whilst the weather is warmer. Situated in the outskirts of Hakatere it’s popular among families for its facilities. The walk-in from the car is relatively easy with little climbs and descents and a smooth track right the way into the hut. It’s easy to haul in a heavier pack to Woolshed Creek with the track being mellow. The second day stats shown below are for following the Ryholite Ridge Track back along to the carpark. It is a step-up from the Miners track that you follow into the hut but makes for a nice loop track. For an easier alternative return via the Miners track back to the carpark.

Peak Hill

Peak Hill is almost Canterbury’s version of the famous Roys Peak walk. It boasts stunning views over Lake Coleridge and over surrounding mountains in the area. It is tucked away deep in the countryside without many signs to direct you to the start. Usually, people will complete the hike within a day (approx 4 hours return) returning the same track. We did this a little differently and camped up below the summit for sunset and woke for sunrise in the mountains, following an overgrown vehicle track back to the base of the mountain on our return journey. It’s a hike that offers incredible views within a close drive to Christchurch.

Mt Fyffe

Mt Fyffe is the prominent mountain that stretches up from the sea right closest to the seaside town of Kaikoura. It is popular among many people in the area and is even a training ground for some athletes. The walk as you ascend the whole way up offers stunning views out over the Kaikoura Peninsula. There are points along the way where park benches are placed to stop, rest and take in the view. You can hike the mountain as a long day hike or stay overnight at Mt Fyffe Hut. The hike is not technically demanding but much more of a long slog up to the summit. Just remember that the views keep getting better the higher you climb.
